Yoga is not just stretching. Yoga is a powerful system of self-care whose benefits have been proven over thousands of years. In this and coming columns I'd like to share with you my viewpoint on those benefits that I feel I can personally vouch for.
Freedom from Sickness
On the physical level, yoga is, first and foremost, a system that promotes all-around health.
I've been teaching yoga for two and half years now, (and have been teaching every day for over a year) and have never missed a class due to illness. This despite being in close physical contact with, over the past year, over a hundred students each week.
I do bring home little gifts from them:
a sore throat here, a sniffle there. In almost every case, however,
the twinges are gone, magically, the next day. It is in fact commonplace
among yoga teachers I know to be utterly surprised when they actually
come down with something.
