Yoga is not just stretching. Yoga is a powerful system of self-care whose benefits have been proven over thousands of years. In this and coming columns I'd like to share with you my viewpoint on those benefits that I feel I can personally vouch for.

Freedom from Sickness

On the physical level, yoga is, first and foremost, a system that promotes all-around health.

I've been teaching yoga for two and half years now, (and have been teaching every day for over a year) and have never missed a class due to illness. This despite being in close physical contact with, over the past year, over a hundred students each week.

I do bring home little gifts from them: a sore throat here, a sniffle there. In almost every case, however, the twinges are gone, magically, the next day. It is in fact commonplace among yoga teachers I know to be utterly surprised when they actually come down with something.
 

Yoga explains this, on the physical level, by saying that it invigorates the energy systems of the body, including the immune system. ("Regular practice builds up the body's inner strength and natural resistance." BKS Iyengar).

I, for one, believe.
